Lori Welch Brown is a mixed-media abstract artist and NoVA native. Art has always been her passion, and after a long break (aka career as a busy entrepreneur), she stumbled upon a drawing class, and has been experimenting, exploring, and creating ever since.
"Art does imitate life. It's only by wrestling through the ugly, messy stages that one finds a place to rest in the beauty of resolution and clarity. And, therein lies the gift. The art of life. Or, a life of art."
Also a writer, Lori likes to incorporates words, phrases, and quotes into her paintings. Though they may get painted over during the creative process, she considers them guides along her creative journey, leading the way to pieces that speak from her heart and soul.
Lori enjoys using uncommon tools and implements--and often her hands-- to create unique marks while working with acrylics, collage, pastel, and charcoal. While she may begin with words and/or a planned subject (florals being a favorite), she then leans heavily into her intuition. The end result is often a pleasant surprise—assuredly with a burst of bright colors.
Lori has been a member of The Loft Gallery since January 2024.
Lori is also a writer and has written a column for The Old Town Crier since 2001. When she's not painting, writing, or guzzling coffee, Lori enjoys spending time with her husband and their fur babies--Dozer, Lucy, and Josie--especially at their happy place in Emerald Isle, NC.
